August 2026 Aloha+ Workday
Focusing on the Aloha+ Goal of Clean Energy Transformation (CET), Hawaiʻi Green Growth and community volunteers visited the Agrivoltaic Site in Mililani, Oʻahu. In collaboration with our hosts the Hawaiʻi Agricultural Research Center (HARC), Clearway Energy LLC, AES Hawaiʻi, and Longroad Energy, we specifically highlighted CET Target 01, Electricity: Renewable/Efficiency. With Hawaiʻi’s overarching goal to generate 100% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2030, our partners are directly contributing with their solar fields.
Agrivoltaics merges photovoltaics and agriculture in one space. Land is a limited resource in Hawaiʻi, but HARC and Clearway Energy LLC have been leading an Agrivoltaic project that grows food in between solar panels. The dual-use of land helps to address the space constraint that Hawaiʻi faces as an island while also providing energy, food, and self-sufficiency. Some of the plants that are currently growing on the agrivoltaic field include kalo, asparagus, strawberries, and vanilla. Volunteers gathered to tour the site, remove weeds, and plant perennial cover crops underneath the solar panels.
Clearway Energy LLC, AES Hawaii, and Longroad Energy share the same space in the Mililani Agricultural Park. In this area, each partner has established acres of solar panels to generate electricity from a renewable source.
HARC continues to support local farmers through research, education, and even providing a space for them to grow crops. In addition to Agrivoltaics, they also explore agroforestry, ways to prevent plant diseases, plant genetics, and more.
