🌺 Exploring the Roots of Wisdom at Ka Papa Lo‘i ‘O Kānewai 🌿 The HGG team had the incredible opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich cultural heritage of Hawai‘i at Ka Papa Lo‘i ‘O Kānewai, a piko for Hawaiian Knowledge at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, with the Hawaiʻi Public Health Instituteʻs Perspectives on Community Health Trip 🌈 🌱 Nestled in the heart of Mānoa Valley, this lo‘i serves as a living classroom, preserving and perpetuating Hawaiian traditions and ancient wisdom regarding the direct connection between water, the life of the land, and all that depends on it. Through hands-on activities, we learned about the history and mo‘olelo guiding its development, the importance of kalo cultivation, the interconnectedness of Hawaiians with the land, and assisted in lo‘i maintenance and stream restoration efforts 🌾 Through this visit, we learned from others, exchanged ideas, and created new relationships with individuals and organisations working towards common goals in Hawaiʻi. 🥳 Yesterday, Hawai‘i Green Growth UN Local2030 Hub presented its 2023 Voluntary Local Review (VLR) to local leaders at the 2023 Pacific Urban Forum in Fiji. The Local2030 Islands Network, along with UN-HABITAT and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), convened region-wide dialogue at the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat amongst island leaders on localization agendas for the SDGs at the 6th Pacific Urban Forum in Suva, Fiji. Hawai‘i shared its lessons learned from its public-private partnership model for the VLR process, sharing its experiences with localized goal setting, tracking SDG progress, designing partnership processes, and creating VLRs to drive policy change and impact. Individuals, businesses, and places of worship are encouraged to stream the 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. sunrise ceremony, the 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (HST) noon ceremony, and the 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. (HST) sunset ceremony, which will be taking place concurrently across the islands. The public is invited to attend the following ceremonies: Maui: • UH Maui College, 310 W. Ka‘ahumanu Ave., Kahului, at Noon. Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla will lead with kumu hula, cultural practitioners, and leaders from diverse faiths. • Ala Kukui, 4224 Hāna Highway at noon. This vigil is a reflection of East Maui’s diverse faiths and rooted in Native Hawaiian place and practice.
