ALOHA+ CHALLENGE
The Aloha+ Challenge is Hawai‘i’s statewide commitment to achieve the 2030 sustainability goals, and is a local framework to implement the Global Sustainable Development Goals. The Aloha+ Challenge goals cut across energy, environment, and community.
ALOHA+ DASHBOARD
The Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard tracks Hawaiʻi’s progress on achieving the 2030 goals for transparacy and accountability. The targets and indicators on the Dashboard were selected based on community priorities and what is appropriate to measure. The dashboard lives on the Hawaiʻi State Government’s website and is an open data platform designed to inform policy and inspire action.

Hawaiʻi Green Growth is a public-private partnership that brings together diverse stakeholders across Hawaiʻi from local and state government, private sector and civil society. As a statewide cross-sector network, HGG members jointly set priorities for collaborative action to advance green growth priorities and the Aloha+ Challenge.

This hands-on invasive plant removal workday will support native ecosystem recovery in Moanalua Valley. Volunteers will help clear fast-growing, fire-prone invasive species including haole koa (stumps and seedlings), Chinese violet, and guinea grass – no prior experience needed!

On March 10, Hawaiʻi Green Growth joined friends and partners at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol for Pilina Kanaloa: Ocean Day. Mahalo nui to the Ocean Legislative Task Force for organizing such an important gathering as we collectively work to conserve, protect, and take action to support our ocean, aquatic, marine, and freshwater ecosystems!
Why is protecting the ocean important? Our oceans control our weather and our environment. Economically, the ocean represents almost 16.6% of the total economy in Hawaiʻi. And as those of us who love and care for the ocean know well, oceans and the life within them are also sacred to culture, tradition, and our social well-being, including offering us opportunities for recreation and community-gathering. Legislatively ensuring the health and conservation of and public access to our oceans for generations to come supports our collective environmental, economic, and social well-being.
Hawaiʻi Green Growth measures the statewide progress towards our natural resource management by working with hundreds of organizations across the public, private and nonprofit sectors all doing important work from mauka to makai. We reflect these marine, terrestrial, and freshwater sustainability targets in the Aloha+ Goal on Natural Resources Management.

📣Happening Now! This morning (3/12), the House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Environment will host an informational briefing on Liquid Natural Gas (LNG). The briefing will be given by representatives from the Hawai’i State Energy Office (HSEO) about their Alternative Fuels, Repowering, and Energy Transition Study and their endorsement of the use of LNG as a bridge fuel.
Third-party experts will also present their assessments of the report, and of the viability of using LNG as a bridge fuel.

On Saturday, February 28, young changemakers from across Hawaiʻi learned about the state legislative process and how they can get involved directly via direct action at a Youth Policy 101 Workshop hosted by HGG and partners, @kuaainauluauamo, @careforainanow, Hawaiʻi Public Policy Advocates, and Resources Legacy Fund.
Participants left having practiced new advocacy skills, including offering written and verbal testimony, engaging with lawmakers, and navigating the Capitol website. We’re looking forward to seeing many of them tomorrow at @pilinakanaloa (Ocean Day) at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol, where they’ll put this new civic knowledge into action!

REMINDER: Youth Policy 101 Workshop this Saturday!
HGG and our partners will be hosting a FREE hybrid workshop for youth policy advocates on UH Mānoa’s campus.
This workshop will present tangible “how-to’s” on the workings of the Hawaiʻi State legislative process, from bill introduction all the way through implementation and accountability. It is designed for self-motivated young people with little to no prior experience interacting with legislative processes, or those seeking to sharpen their skills and meet new faces.
The event will be co-hosted by Hawaiʻi Green Growth, KUA (@kuaainauluauamo ), Hawaiʻi Public Policy Advocates, Care for ʻĀina Now (@careforainanow ), and Resources Legacy Fund, and is targeted at youth aged 15-20 (but all are welcome to attend!).

On Monday, January 26, Hawaiʻi Green Growth team members joined the Care for ʻĀina Now Coalition at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol for the Governor’s State of the State Address and to meet with legislators to advocate for support of HB1949, which would establish the Green Fee Resiliency Impact Dashboard (GRID) to track funds with accountability and transparency. Governor Green’s State of the State address restated the significance of the Hawaiʻi State Green Fee passage and how this will support resilience building for our state. In this upcoming session, Hawaiʻi Green Growth and the CAN are advocating for:
🌱 Community organizations / non-profits to be allocated funds (and direct collaborators with state agencies)
🌱 HB1949: Establishing the Green Fee Transparency and Accountability Program and Green Fee Resiliency Impact Dashboard;
🌱 Equitable Package across the counties and outer islands, including small community-based organizations;
🌱 Additive funding that ensures that Green Fee appropriations are supplemental to the base conservation that already exists, and that these funds don’t supplant existing resources.

In September, Hawaiʻi Green Growth convened the leaders of the Maui Resilience Partnership, decision-makers at the state and County levels, youth representatives, and various community and state-agency leaders and stakeholders to explore the system-level scale of wildfire risk management on Maui to identify catalytic levers – including policy, investment, and cross-sectoral collaboration – to strengthen community and watershed resilience.

The Hawaiʻi Green Growth team and SDG Youth Council members joined state elected officials, community members, youth leaders, and sustainability advocates from all sectors at the opening day of the 2026 Hawaiʻi Legislative Session. As a collective impact organization stewarding the state’s 2030 sustainability commitment and the Aloha+ Challenge, HGG participated to:
⭐️Advocate for the alignment of Aloha+ Goal language across related legislation to track related bills to the state’s sustainability priorities and commitments;
⭐️Engage signatories of the Aloha+ Challenge, including the Office of the Governor, County Mayors, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and our HGG Network to remind them of their commitment and progress towards these goals;
⭐️Celebrate community leadership for Aloha+ aligned legislation the action that gets us closer to our commitments through with policy interventions, including landmark legislation like the Hawaiʻi Green Fee that passed in 2025, and upcoming 2026 legislation related to community co-management

2025 celebrates the 40th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Okinawa and Hawaiʻi. Earlier this week, Hawaiʻi Green Growth welcomed a delegation from the Okinawa Prefectural Government Office of Planning and the SDG Office to learn more about the implementation of the SDGs and the Aloha+ Challenge across the State of Hawaiʻi. This visit explored similarities and opportunities for collaboration between two island states, as well as meetings to further explore HGGʻs partnerships and collaborations with the University of Hawaiʻi Institute of Sustainability of Resilience (ISR) and the Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council.

Last week, the Care for ʻĀina Now Coalition, Hawaiʻi Green Growth, Hawaiʻi Public Policy Advocates, and the Resources Legacy Fund hosted a hybrid Green Fee training workshop to strengthen community capacity for state funding application and advoacy processes. Participants from across Hawaiʻi learned best practices for engaging in the state budget process, built advocacy skills, and gained insight into Act 96 and the Hawaiʻi State Green Fee funds. The event provided an opportunity for cross-sector collaboration among organizations committed to advancing community-based sustainability initiatives.

Last weekend, young leaders across the state convened for the 2025 Hawaiʻi Youth Climate Summit at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol, connecting intersectional climate issues to the Statewide Aloha+ Goals 🌺📜🌟
The event, hosted by the Climate Future Forum, gathered youth ages 14-26 to engage with legislators, forge relationships with each other and with community organizations, and help shape Hawaiʻi’s climate priorities for the 2026 legislative session.

On October 6, join Hawaiʻi Green Growth and other local and global partners for this annual Urban October event to discuss trends, strategies and opportunities for action related to sustainable urbanization in our island-based context.
The Honolulu Local Observance of World Habitat Day and the Coalition for Specialized Housing will bring together community groups to review policies and programs surrounding urban resilience, inclusive economic growth, and housing for this yearʻs gathering, centering conversations on a theme of Urban Resilience. Participants will hear from local authorities and thought leaders on active urban regeneration programs, share success stories, and develop shared and ongoing advocacy campaigns to ensure forward thinking, adaptive response, better preparedness for future crises, and a better urban future for all.

As we continue to celebrate Hawaiian History Month, we spotlight the (growing!) movement to add an 18th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to the UN agenda: Vibrant Culture. The additon calls attention to the importance and foundation of culture in guiding us (back) to a sustainable, connected world. As native Hawaiian high school student and SDG Youth Council member Kinohi Souki articulated on the UN stage, “When we think of culture, we see it as the foundation of life; we see it as the foundation of sustainability.”
Five representatives from the Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council are currently attending MONDIACULT, UNESCO’s global Culture and Policy Conference, in Barcelona, Spain, representing Hawai’i alongside Pacific and global leaders to advocate for the addition of SDG 18 and share Hawai‘i’s context with the world. They were invited to speak on stage about what this means in Hawai‘i’s place-based context and how Hawaiian culture and values — especially those of Aloha ‘āina — can be shared across the globe.

Hawaiʻi Green Growth celebrates the signing of Act 167 on June 3, 2025, designating September as Hawaiian History Month in the State of Hawaiʻi. This measure honors the enduring legacy of Queen Liliʻuokalani and recognizes the many contributions of the Native Hawaiian community to Hawaiʻi’s past, present, and future. We carry this legacy with us beyond September, and these values guide our work all year.
This past week, Hawaiʻi Green Growth helped facilitate the first Symposium for Climate Resilience at the Kahala Hotel and Resort. This two-day event brought together climate experts from across the state to give talks and participate in roundtable discussions on the future of climate resilience.
Our very own Kalani Kaʻanāʻanā spoke to participants about HGGʻs work on the Aloha+ Challenge, and drew on the voices of our SDG Youth Council to close his remarks. Other HGG staff helped to facilitate roundtable discussions, take notes on proposed solutions, and offer their own wisdom throughout the symposium. Our team was inspired by the progress made last week, and grateful to have been able to help out with this first-of-its-kind event.

Kalani Ka‘ana‘ana, CEO of Hawai‘i Green Growth, said, “While the challenges ahead are real, the momentum is with us. HGG facilitates the Ala Wai Watershed Collaboration (AWWC), a network of government, business, and community partners committed to a more resilient and prosperous Ala Wai Watershed, Hawaiʻi’s most densely populated watershed.
In partnership with 3RWater, HGG, and the AWWC are working to identify and prioritize sites for green stormwater infrastructure from ridge to reef to help community members invest in nature-based solutions that tangibly reduce flood risk, restore ecosystems, and strengthen community resilience.

@kuaainauluauamo (KUA) means “grassroots growing through shared kuleana (responsibility).” The acronym KUA means backbone. KUA works to develop generative networks, and we bring each network together for an annual gathering for 3-4 days of camping, hands-on stewardships, place-based learning workshops, and governance activities. From these large events we develop community driven smaller capacity based workshops, build on collective issues of interest in systemic transformation and advocacy and connecting them to the larger conservation movement and institutional supporters in ways that build their capacity to change the context of their work to one that is more favorable to their values and aloha ʻāina - love for the land.
KUA’s work supports community movements in ways that accelerate community capacity and ability to transform the context of their work. This has included streamlining burdensome government processes that inhibit restoration and community conservation, co-management initiatives, and socio-cultural values concerning our environment.
The core of our work began and continues to be at our shorelines, where communities have developed relationships, values, and policies that support the co-management and co-governance of our nearshore environment.

@pacificrisa, in collaboration with @NOAA, the University of Hawaii Sea Level Rise Center (UHSLC), and the Local 2030 Islands Network @islands2030, this effort aims to produce impact-driven information to support flood risk management and climate adaptation planning.
Through a combination of interviews, workshops, and training with Palauan stakeholders, the team gained insights into historical flood impacts, identified vulnerable locations, and assessed critical information needs. This stakeholder-centered approach ensures that the research is inclusive, culturally respectful, and aligned with local priorities.
Building on this qualitative foundation, a quantitative analysis is underway to develop flood impact indicators for high-risk areas such as roads, causeways, the national hospital, taro fields, schools, and cultural heritage sites—a key step in linking sea level rise data to real-world impacts.
The final set of indicators will be co-developed with Palauan partners to ensure cultural relevance and usability, to integrate them into national SDG tracking platforms like the Palau VNR and the Palau Green Growth SDG Dashboard.

At @WormOhana, we got our hands dirty (in the best way) learning how composting transforms food scraps into soil magic and the Solid Waste Reduction goal. Mahalo to Mindy and all the changemakers turning waste into wonder.
We are thankful for community members like Kū Pa’a Total Care Services LLC, who share materials with the community to reduce waste in our landfills. Kū Pa’a donated cinderblocks we will give out when we help install rain barrels as part of the Follow the Drop Initiative!
The goal of the Punahou Sustainability Fair is to educate students about the importance of sustainability and inspire them to be sustainable in their everyday lives.
HGG hosted the third Policy and Legislation Working Group Meeting of 2025, during which Network partners were invited to share their policy priorities during the recent 2025 legislative session and beyond. A big mahalo to our gracious hosts, Purple Maiʻa.
HGG’s Network Director, Samantha Happ, provided technical training to UN FAO colleagues on the community-led process behind producing Hawaiʻi’s Statewide Voluntary Local Review. FAO recognized HGG for the collaborative Network processes and model that result in enhanced data sharing and coordination to achieve local and global goals.
Bishop Museum’s Science & Sustainability Festival brought together Museum scientists, educators, cultural practitioners, and community partners to highlight the ongoing work needed to protect biodiversity and build a sustainable future in Hawaiʻi.
Through targeted presentations to multiple neighborhood boards across the Ala Wai Watershed, we’ve sought to raise awareness, foster informed dialogue, and gather community feedback to refine the proposed Special Improvement District initiative.
During the Q2 2025 Measures Working Group meeting, the group discussed updates around the VLR, Oʻahu and Maui Youth convenings qualitative inputs for the VLR, recent changes to the Clean Energy Transformation Goal and 01 Target on Electricity: Renewables/Efficiency, and group discussion on the proposed revisions to the Natural Resource Management 03 Marine Managed Areas Target.

HGG is delighted to share highlights from a busy April, Earth Month.
The Local2030 Islands Network convened the inaugural Green Growth Summit at the 16th Annual Conference on Island Sustainability in Guam, which brought together Network members and partners to advance economic development on islands. The Local2030 Islands Network delegation included island youth, who were represented on panels, through performances, and in offering key solutions and discussions.
The Aloha+ Challenge Senate Concurrent Resolution 183 was adopted in final form. During the Senate committee hearing, Kiary, a Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council representative, provided in-person testimony. Additional testimony was offered virtually by her peers attending the Annual Conference on Island Sustainability in Guam during the House committee hearing, including Pua, who then shared the experience with other island youth.
To support HGG’s preparation of the 2025 Voluntary Local Review, the SDG Youth Council designed and led peer-to-peer forums to engage youth across the state on taking action for sustainability and the Aloha+ Goals.
The UH Mānoa Institute for Sustainability and Resilience and HGG co-tabled at the UH Mānoa Earth Day event. They engaged students in conversations about local sustainability efforts and highlighted student capstone research, internship opportunities, and the Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard.
Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council Representative and Native Hawaiian Kiary Kea (14) offered her insights during the recent Youth Consultation toward the Fourth Financing for Development Conference.
In celebration of this year’s Earth Day, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation hosted a "Trees for Pālolo" event, during which nine trees were planted at Pālolo Valley District Park.
The HGG team supported the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle's "I Love Kailua Town Party" plant sale, highlighting the work of the Women’s Community Correctional Center.
Recognized for its impact and ambition, the Local2030 Islands Network was invited to present its latest commitment, "Green Growth for Resilient Islands,” on the floor of the Ocean-Climate Plenary at the 10th Our Ocean Conference in Busan, Korea.

The Ala Wai Watershed Collaboration, which is a network of community, government, and business partners 🤝committed to a more resilient and prosperous Ala Wai Watershed, has drafted a bill which would establish an Ala Wai Watershed Special Improvement District and corresponding CIVic coordinating structure to plan, implement, and monitor local watershed improvement 📈projects that have been vetted and prioritized by the community.
💧Follow the Drop is a Nature-Based Solution (NbS)🍃 project to recharge our aquifers and mitigate flooding and brown water runoff flowing into nearshore marine habitats. 🪸 Rain gardens, bioswales, rain barrels, and other “green stormwater infrastructure” (GSI)🌳 are effective ways of achieving this by keeping rainwater💦 where it falls.

On the International Day of Education, we mahalo the Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council for all of their incredible work supporting educational and leadership pathways for Hawai‘i’s keiki and haumāna on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) while encouraging a culture of sustainability grounded in mālama ‘āina.
In the Hawaiian Islands, as well as other Island nations and economies in the Pacific, there is an inherent sense of sustainability instilled in youth during their upbringing. Island youth provide a much-needed perspective in the climate change and sustainability movements.

This short documentary follows the Birds, Not Mosquitoes organization’s work to save the Hawaiian honeycreeper from extinction, which is being hastened by mosquito-borne avian disease. Featuring interviews with field teams battling extinction on Maui and Kaua'i, the film captures the plight of the honeycreepers and the importance of native forest birds both to the ecosystem and the local communities. It also features the efforts of the keiki of Hawai'i, who have rallied to support the cause after learning about the crisis. Through storytelling and education, the film aims to bridge knowledge gaps, foster empathy, and encourage community participation in safeguarding Hawai'i's biodiversity.

The Climate Future Forum and CCMAC are excited to announce the 2024 Climate Future Forum and Youth Climate Summit on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at the Hawai’i state Capitol!
The Climate Future Forum portion in the morning is for youth (ages 14-26), use the QR code to register!
The mission of the Climate Future Forum (8:30am-Noon) is to inspire youth to be active and engaged participants in the 2025 legislative session on climate policy and legislation. The event will bring together youth (ages 14-26), educators, policymakers, and supportive organizations to evaluate and discuss climate action priorities and provide tangible steps to empower youth and give them agency in policy. Our hope is for youth to forge relationships with policymakers so that they can continue to work together throughout the 2025 legislative session at the county, state, and national levels.
The Youth Climate Summit (open to all ages of youth and their families) is to immediately follow at noon. The mission of the Youth Climate Summit is to connect interested youth of all ages with various organizations who work in the sustainability and/or climate change sectors. The whole family is welcome to participate and learn about how Hawai'i's youth can become leaders in the climate space. There will be interactive booths, prizes, and more! We are also having a Food Drive with Hawaii Food Bank, please bring items to donate if you can/wish.

In honor of UN Day, we are reminded of the 6th Annual American Leaders Advancing the SDGs co-hosted by the UN Foundation and Brookings Institution at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, where the Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council advocated for the importance of connecting culture and place-based knowledge in achieving and advancing the global Sustainable Development Goals with island and indigenous communities serving as a North Star.
Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council Representative Kinohi joined a moderated panel and discussed incorporating the value of Aloha into Hawaiʻi's local interpretation of the SDGs for their meaningful implementation: “In the Hawaiian language, alo means face, and hā means the breath of life. When you love someone, you give them hā, which means you touch faces at the nose and you breathe, giving each other your breath of life. And that is what Hawaiʻi is."

The Aloha+ Dashboard provides an open-access data platform 🖥️ that tracks Hawaiʻi's progress 📶on its sustainability goals, aligning local actions with global targets. It enables transparency, data-driven decision-making, and community engagement towards achieving the Aloha+ Challenge goals. ✅
The UN SDGs were 17 goals adopted in 2015 that provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. 📃 They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health ❤️🩹and education 📖, reduce inequality 📉, and spur economic growth 📈– all while tackling climate change 🍃and working to preserve our oceans 🌊 and forests 🌳.

🌳The Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference was a great success with over 1,400 participants! We hosted a table in their Exhibitor Hall and connected with numerous partners and organizations doing AMAZING things in the field of conservation, like lab-grown mosquitoes to curb their populations to give endangered birds a fighting chance.
We asked attendees, “What do you envision for the future of Hawaiʻi?”, an important question we should all be thinking about. So tell us, what do YOU envision for Hawaiʻi’s future?
🌊Waimea Valley HGG Volunteer Day: we spent the day prepping koa seeds, sorting through good and bad ones, and getting rid of the weevils that chose koa seeds as their snack. Then we got a tour of the garden where we learned about native Hawaiian plants such as ʻilima, koa, naupaka, pōhinahina, ʻōhiʻa lehua, and more!
🤝Our Q3 Policy & Legislation meeting was in person this time! We met at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol, where we hosted Vice Speaker Greggor Ilagan, Senator Hashimoto, and Governor’s Senior Advisor, Blake Oshiro, who all shared their thoughts on the 2024 Legislative Session.
💪Gals with LEI 2024 Global was an event hosted by the East-West Center that celebrated the Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Inspiration of women business and social entrepreneurs in generating jobs and strengthening communities. Hearing these women share their stories was a true inspiration!

The Aloha+ Challenge goal “Solid Waste Reduction” (SWR) builds on a State of Hawaiʻi law mandating solid waste stream reduction by 50% by January 1, 2000. ♻️
😢 This target was not reached in Hawaiʻi, nor any state in the U.S., which is why the State of Hawaiʻi, four Counties, and Office of Hawaiian Affairs agreed to recommit to the target and increase ambition to 70% waste reduction by 2030.💚

@malama_kauai works to grow local Kauaʻi communities through increased food production and access by building upon their culture and relationship with the land. 🍎🌳
Through their various programs Mālama Kauaʻi is making progress towards Hawaiʻi’s localized sustainable development goals, the Aloha+ Challenge, with direct alignment to Local Food Production & Consumption, Green Workforce & Education, and Smart Sustainable Communities. 🤩🙌💪

@hawaiiulucoop works to help revitalize and bring back Hawaiian staple crops such as ʻulu (breadfruit), kalo (taro), ʻuala (sweet potato), and palaʻai (pumpkin) by empowering the farming communities to be a change in Hawaiʻiʻs food system. They started with nine small growers on Hawaiʻi Island and have grown to over 150 member-farms throughout the Hawaiian Islands. 🍎🌳
